If I were to ask how fit you are, what would you say?
I used to go into a long-winded description of the types of exercises I do, the exercises I used to do and then stammer a bit like Hugh Grant in Four Weddings and A Funeral. Not anymore.
Now I can proudly say I’m 82. That’s my Fitness Score (and not my age, BTW).
On Monday, 27 January, 12WBT members will be able to discover their exact fitness level by being awarded a Fitness Score.
To help understand what a Fitness Score is and why it’s important, I asked the person who created it – Daniel Swanbury, 12WBT’s Fitness Editor.
Q: What is a Fitness Score?
A: A Fitness Score is a single number that sums up your fitness level based on a series of tests. You’ll complete these in Pre-Season, and then in week four, eight and 12 of the program.
You’ll perform a fitness test based on each of the five major areas below (so five exercises in total):
- Cardiovascular fitness
- Upper-body strength
- Lower-body strength
- Core strength
- Flexibility
This is because we know that being fit and healthy is about more than just being good in one of these areas – instead, it’s about excelling in all!
Points will be given depending on how you perform each test, giving you an overall Fitness Score.
Q: Why is a Fitness Score important?
A: It will ensure you’re allocated to the right 12WBT program for your abilities. Taking the test four times throughout your program makes it easier for you to track your progress, see results and stay motivated.
The test is based on actual data to define your fitness level. We’ve structured the scoring based on 12WBT member results and how each 12WBT Program intensifies. Using the results we set a baseline to map:
- What you’re capable of
- What is a good level of fitness
- Where you can improve
Q: Who created the Fitness Score?
A: I came up with the concept as a way to simplify the current test for members, while also giving them more information. 12WBT will suggest the Program that best suits a member’s fitness level based on the data from their score.
Q: What should I do when I know my Fitness Score?
A: You should do two things:
1. Choose the program most suited to your fitness level based on our recommendations to you.
2. IMPROVE it. Your MyStats page will suggest progression goals for you – make an effort to achieve them!
Improving your fitness score means you’re improving your fitness, health and wellbeing, so you’ll be the best version of yourself.
